Pashto Poetry (Pashto: پښتو شاعري) is a rich and profound literary tradition that reflects the cultural, spiritual, and historical essence of the Pashtun people. Spanning over five thousand years, Pashto poetry has its roots in the ancient oral tradition of Tappa (Pashto: ټپه/لنډۍ), a form of folk poetry that continues to resonate deeply with Pashtun identity. The first recorded poetry in Pashto dates back to the 7th century with Amir Kror Suri, a warrior poet whose works laid the foundation for future Pashto literature.
As Pashto literature evolved, figures like Pir Roshan in the 16th century gave it a new and powerful voice. He introduced philosophical and spiritual themes in his writings, particularly through his influential work Khair-ul-Bayan, which is considered one of the earliest books on Sufism in Pashto literature. The Roshanniya movement he founded inspired a wave of Pashto poets and scholars, including Arzani, Mukhlis, Mirza Khan Ansari, Daulat, and Wasil, whose works remain highly revered.
In contrast, Akhund Darweza, another prominent scholar, offered a religious counter-narrative through his writings, enriching Pashto literature with texts like Makhzanul Islam. This period marked a significant development in Pashto prose and poetry, contributing to the language’s literary richness.
The tradition of Pashto poetry continued to flourish with legendary poets like Khushal Khan Khattak, who in the 17th century championed the unity of the Pashtun people through his warrior poetry, and Rahman Baba, whose spiritual verses have made him one of the most beloved poets in Pashto literature. In the modern era, poets like Khan Abdul Ghani Khan have continued to contribute to this legacy, blending philosophy, art, and nationalism into their works.
Pashto poetry is not only a reflection of the Pashtun soul but also a means of sharing emotions and experiences through beautiful poems. Both the nazm and ghazal forms are loved by those who enjoy poetry, providing a platform to express love, sorrow, joy, and reflection.
